Insulator & Fencing Basics
Insulators
The function of an insulator is to prevent any power leaking to ground. Desirable features of insulators are:
Wire be free to slide through – one nail insulators may rotate
Wire should not have to be threaded
Long surface leadage path – say at least 15mm,
Be able to withstand horizontal and vertical stress.
Porcelain: Most reliable and essential in high strain positions, i.e. End or Corner Posts.
Thermoplastics:
Give effective insulation. Cheap. Will withstand stress,
- Don’t use rubber it deteriorates in sunlight.
- Don’t use PVC plastic – becomes hard and tends to crack.
- Don’t use water pipe wrapped around a post in a strain position, should not be used as an insulator.
Use Cheta Insultube for long life insulation – Heavy and Light Duty types.
Basic Rules of Fencing
-
Your electric fence system should be planned thoroughly before construction.
-
Build Strong and Secure strainer and angle posts.
-
Use 12 gauge high-tension wire.
-
Use high quality Cheta insulators.
-
Clean up all loose wire,
-
Maintain a minimum of 6 in. ground clearance.
-
Do maintenance on fence lines on a regular basis.
-
Follow the Cheta instructions as to installation and earthing.
-
A well constructed fence is a good barrier even without electrification.
Remember:
A well constructed fence is a good barrier even without electrification.
